It wouldn’t be me if I didn’t casually rip out the front walkway while redoing the yard.. what’s a little extra demo between friends ?
This gorgeous walkway inspired by a google photo I found. Yes, google. I’m old school baby.
Living in a coastal area & repulsed by all things seashells and flamingos your girl took the things that stuck out in my mind at 7 years old when I told myself I will live by the beach. I remembered the clacking of the boards under my feet, the pebbles in the sand & crisp lightness of the sand.
I took that shit and ran with it. Here’s what I did;
Keeping the walkway dimensions as close to the original and addressing the fact my house was built on a street that ended up on a slight angle I got to work. Yes, my house was here most likely before the sidewalks we’re out here repping 1918.
First, lay out weed blocking paper and anchor them in. Personally I prefer the metal ones as they penetrate the barrier easier.
Second, I put a light layer of rock down and then the boards. Doing this I made sure the boards were centered and slightly elevated especially from the sides so that the water can run off. Safety first, aside from the pooling looking rough, potentially making its way back to your foundation area can add to potential water issues.
Third, I placed the boards where they belonged leaving the same amount of space and packed in the rock. Over the course of two days I ended up adding 4-5 extra bags of rock because you’re dealing with the elements your stuff will shift. Even the wood will compact and expand with the ever changing temperatures.
In a couple weeks from now I have every intention of staining but with pressure treated wood you MUST let it dry out.
